"One of the people wounded in a Gresham convenience store shooting that left one man dead and five others hurt is the nephew of Miami Heat basketball star Dwyane Wade, according to a statement by the Chicago native.
The shooting happened at about 6 p.m. Thursday at the Bishop Golden store on the 1400 block of West 79th Street when two men jumped out of an SUV, walked into the small store and opened fire, according to police. One of the people used a TEC-9 type gun.
Wade, who was born on the South Side and raised in south suburban Robbins, was playing this evening with the Heat in Toronto.
In a statement prepared for release before the game, Wade says he does not have all the details, but that his "thoughts and prayers are with all involved." Wade says his nephew remains hospitalized, but is doing well.
A spokesperson for Wade declined to confirm the nephew's name or condition, and could provide no other information.
In the shooting, Shawndell Harris, of the 9600 block of South Perry Avenue, was killed, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office."
